23/04/07 Freeview is here and Stewarts Electrical Supplies are here to help you through this major change in the way we receive digital television signals in the future.

Freeview, Free to air digital television,  will launch with digital satellite television in early May 2007 with digital terrestrial television at some stage through 2008 in some areas only.  Freeview will launch in May with TV1, TV2, TV3, C4, Maori television with Radio New Zealand radio services.

Who is Freeview?, Freeview is a group of free to air broadcasters, TVNZ, Canwest, Maori Television and Radio New Zealand, who have worked as a non profit co-operative to create a digital platform on which their channels can be broadcast. Each broadcaster will decide which of its channels it will make available to Freeview and where a maximum of eighteen channels could become available at a later date.

Freeview will offer the consumer high quality digital television as opposed to the current low resolution television that is been broadcast via the standard terrestrial system we have at present.

It is possible that there will be an extra two channels launched (one by the end of this year and the other early next year) these being a 24 hour New Zealand based news and sports channel along with a family channel.

As new channels are introduced the Freeview approved decoder which is sold by Stewarts will automatically update your decoder with these channels.

The Freeview accredited receiver ( available from any Stewarts branch ) will have an interactive Electronic Programme Guide (EPG). The EPG will enable the viewer to have a look at what’s currently on, what’s coming up next on that particular channel along with a brief synopsis and rating of the programme.

The EPG will also enable you to look at what is on for the next eight days in advance.

The Freeview receiver will also have a programme timer function so in effect you will be able to ‘book’ a particular programme and when that programme is about to start the receiver will automatically change to the booked programme.

Why change The traditional analogue terrestrial aerial reception is due to be terminated within the next six to ten years so digital satellite and digital terrestrial transmission will take over.

Stewarts is at the forefront with this technology and will soon be able to supply Freeview approved set top boxes ( decoders ) that will match the current products that we have of digital satellite dishes, field strength meters and all ancillary equipment.
