Testing of Insulation

Article Date: March 10th, 2005

Author: Daniel Huynen

As we understand it, there are two ways of testing the insulation of class l and class ll equipment as stated in AS/NZS 3760:2003.

(A) With a leakage current test. (refer to AS/NZS 3760:2003 for values in relevant tables)

(B) Measure insulation resistance. (refer to AS/NZS 3760:2003 for values in relevant tables)

There is also a note in the Standard that states:

Insulation resistance tests shall be performed with the switch in the "on" position. If the equipment must be energized to close or operate a switching device, then a leakage current test shall be preformed.

The Cuthbert Stewart meter the "TNT" dose not perform the leakage current test.

The Cuthbert Stewart meter the "TNT EL" and the "TNT" + both perform the leakage current test.
